This is a short, simple history of the events that led to the expulsion of Jews from Spain in It didn't tell me much I didn't already know, though I did appreciate the placement of the actual explusion decrees in appendices. Perez emphasizes that even during the so-called glory days of Spanish Judaism, Spain was much less tolerant than any modern society. One interesting point the book made was that Spain was not only not unique, it was actually the last major Western European nation to expel the Jews. Perez even goes so far to say that Spain was less cruel than other nations; I think he goes overboard here.

Spanish Jews were not merely murdered in pogroms, expelled and impoverished, but were also tortured and murdered by the Inquisition even if they converted to Christianity and sometimes if they didn't as well!
